The IFP has been on an upward trajectory since the 2021 municipal elections, but the year 2023 also marked three challenges for the party: The death of its bedrock, lifelong president Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi; infighting in its upper echelons over succession; and political and administrative scandals in its municipalities.
