Mapantsula was the first South African film to screen in competition at the Cannes film festival, yet it had been made on the fly, guerrilla-style, with a fake script to distract the SA censors. Writer-director Oliver Schmitz and writer-actor Thomas Mogotlane had developed the real script in secret, over years.
